Simple Answers
April 10, 1967

I saw a man
Staring
Through a window
Into a place
Of great beauty.
His face bore
A tear;
His mind bore
A simple question;
He wondered
Why those inside
Were inside,
And why he was outside
Barefooted,
Cold
And black.

Rendezvous
October 25, 1969

Walking down a lonely street,
It was near to midnight
As I passed a streetlight
And saw a shadow hurry by.

I stopped and spoke,
Asking its name.
It whispered back to me,
"Friend, I am your friend."

Seeing a bench,
And with nothing better to do,
I sat down as if to rest,
And the shadow moved to sit beside me.

In silence we sat there
Until an hour passed or so;
Then I got up to go,
And my friend the shadow too.

As I stepped from the curb
To cross the narrow street,
A whisper said, "We'll meet again."
I turned and said, "Yes, you're right;
   goodbye, my friend."

As I walked away,
The darkness crept around me,
And I was alone again,
And time was passing on.

Rachael, Rachael
December 31, 1969

A lonely time,
And thoughts
   of a friend of mine.

Happiness is,
And you will have it.
It waits for you
Nearby,
Like a sunrise
On a frosty winter morning,
With accompanying songs of loving
And warm thoughts.

Strong arms
Will encircle you
To hold you close and safe
And protect you
For love
Forever.

When loneliness haunts,
Like some unfriendly spirit,
Think of other times
Not far past
Nor far away,
And think of those
   who love you
Each day.

A future calls for you,
So smile and run to it,
Peace and love,
  My friend,
May it never end.
